Bandwidth guarantees for predictable datacentres
Myungjin Lee, University of Edinburgh
Abstract
Providing bandwidth guarantees to datacentre (DC) applications is becoming increasingly important as the applications require predictable performance and compete for shared cloud DC network resources. Many emerging cloud applications are complex combinations of multiple services, each of which may have different bandwidth requirements, whereas datacentre networks tend to be oversubscribed. Thus ill-suited management can quickly exhaust the network resources, prohibiting more applications from achieving predictable performance. In this talk, I will introduce a few recent approaches that attempt to efficiently utilise DC network resources to maximise the number of bandwidth-guaranteed DC applications.
About the speaker
Myungjin Lee is a Chancellor's Fellow in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He holds a Ph.D. in the Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University. He obtained a master's degree in Computer Science from KAIST and a B.E. degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Kyungpook National University, both based in South Korea. His main research area is computer networks. Particular topics of interest include resource-efficient scheduling mechanisms in cloud datacentre networks, and scalable streaming algorithms and architectures for various network functions such as network monitoring and traffic measurement.
